چکیده
This research provides a characterization of ancient Roman mortars from “Villa del Capo di Sorrento” (commonly known as Pollio Felice” or “Bagni della Regina Giovanna”). A deepened analysis cementitious binding matrix and aggregates was conducted with the aims determining possible sources raw materials mix recipe, to evaluate minerogenetic secondary processes. Twenty samples taken Villa were investigated by means multi-analytical approach, including polarized optical microscopy on thin sections, X-ray powder diffraction, scanning electron analysis, energy dispersed spectrometry, simultaneous thermal analyses, mercury intrusion porosimetry. Bedding made slaked lime mixed volcanic materials, whereas coating adding previous recipe ceramic fragments. All classified hydraulic mortars. Cementitious characterized gel-like C-A-S-H, calcite, hydrocalumite, gypsum, deriving lime/pozzolanic material. Geomaterials used for mortar production had local origin. Pozzolanic such fragments, scoriae, pumice, crystal fragments derived both pyroclastic rocks Campi Flegrei district Somma-Vesuvio complex; porosity test suggest that products related processes, make more resistant.

Suitable classification of mortars from ancient Roman and Renaissance frescoes using thermal analysis and chemometrics
BACKGROUND Literature on mortars has mainly focused on the identification and characterization of their components in order to assign them to a specific historical period, after accurate classification. For this purpose, different analytical techniques have been proposed. Aim of the present study was to verify whether the combination of thermal analysis and chemometric methods could be used to ...

The Provenance of Sand in Mortars from Roman Villas in Ne Italy: a Chemical-Mineralogical Approach
The chemicalmineralogical composition of the sand fractions of mortars found in Roman villas dating from the 1 st century A.C. located in Northern Italy has been investigated by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy plus energy dispersive spectroscopy microanalysis and x-ray diffractometry. The petrographic results on the mortar samples have been compared with mineralogical data avai...
